Even as a society is shifting back to the “normal” way of working in offices pre- pandemic, there is still no doubt about the fact that more people will be working remotely than ever. People might do it willingly or unwillingly but there will be times when you are not in the same room as the folks you’re having a meeting or a presentation with.
Online presentations are something that need to be mastered as the dynamics of a face to face presentation and virtual presentation are starkly different. Let’s dive into some of the tips below to unpack the challenges and opportunities that comes with the virtual world of presentations today.
1. Be clear about the objective
Clarity is the antidote to anxiety. We are all aware that you have to work a little harder at keeping the attention of your clients, peers, students, etc in a virtual space. It is inevitable that people’s minds will wander, one thing that helps combat this is knowing about the challenges that come with it e.g Zoom fatigue. Zoom Fatigue is a term coined because of the recent pandemic which means that you are virtually tired of looking at your screen and even though you want to, you are unable to fully engage with the person on the other side of the screen. Keeping the “WHY” of your presentation clear and building your outline and script around it will immensely help you keep the attention of your audience. Anything beyond the desired objective which you think is necessary can be included in the hand out or any follow up communication.
2. Visual Content is your best friend
If you are going to use a presentation remember to go easy on the text and get creative with the visuals. Usually bold images and colours might distract the audience from what is being said. Try new things such as gifs, memes, any photos or videos that might help in communicating the point being said in a better way. Gifs & memes might not be suitable for your audience but you can spruce up your presentation by the use of visually appealing colours, graphics, and other art styles.
3. Ask questions
Asking yourself any of the questions in advance that may appear in a presentation, will help you prepare in a well rounded way. One other way that is used in silicon valley is to give your audiences the chance to ask their questions about the topic in advance. These opportunities to ask questions can be placed when they sign up. Even if you are presenting in front of colleagues an email before the presentation asking them for any questions in advance will help you understand the needs of your audiences more.
4. Uss your mistakes to your advantage
Fumbling, losing your train of thought or maybe forgetting to share a piece of information shouldn’t be a point of embarrassment for the presenter. This is an opportunity for you to use self deprecating humour to help your audience feel at ease. Knowing that you are also a human being who makes mistakes will help you connect with your audience more and keep their attention for longer periods of time.
5. Be yourself
At the end of the day whether in person or virtual human beings tend to be nervous when they’re in the spotlight. One way to think about it is that the physiological response of your body is the same when you’re anxious and when you are excited. To keep your nerves down, think that you are excited rather than nervous. We encourage you to embrace your imperfections and just be the wacky you!!
Last but not the least is don’t forget to enjoy your own presentation. We hope these tips help you nail your presentations. Let us know what other things you have learned from experiencing virtual presentations.
